FAQs
Kids to Camp is a joint campaign run in partnership between SU NSW and Hope 103.2. In December 2019, generous listeners and individuals donated enough money so that 538 kids who are impacted by the drought can have a fully-funded break at the SU Camp of their choice in 2020.
Fun and affordable, SU Camps run every school holidays, covering a range of interests. They are run by approved volunteer leaders who have boundless energy and a heart for reaching kids and youth for Christ.

Who is eligible?
Full-funding is available for anyone in drought, drought-affected and intense drought areas in NSW.
Anyone whose life is impacted by the drought is eligible to apply. This includes farming families and others in NSW whose incomes are reduced, or jobs are lost because of the way the drought is harming local economies.
Full-funding is available for any SU Camp in NSW. Other discounts are available. Apply and register online: sunsw.org.au/camps!
Is it only for farming families?
No. The drought is impacting many communities across NSW. For example, water restrictions have impacted manufacturing industries and processing factories, causing job cuts, and reducing hours. Shops have closed or reduced their hours. Casual work is less plentiful, and many teens who would like to work have little or no opportunity.
I’m not drought-affected, can I access help?
Our Benevolent Fund has existed for many years, and provides financial assistance for campers and volunteer leaders experiencing any kind of financial hardship to attend SU Camps and Leadership Conference at a price discounted by up to 50%.
Which Camps and other events are included?
All SU Camps which are held in NSW qualify, including our Leadership Conferences. Overseas and interstate events are not included. SUPAServe Broken Hill will only be sponsored to the value of $250.
How do I apply?
On our website go to sunsw.org.au/camps, find the Camp you wish to attend and click “register”. Fill out the form which appears, answering the relevant questions. A second form then opens with fields relating to the Kids to Camp fund. Complete both forms and we’ll do the rest!
Others are worse off than me!
There is always someone worse off. Kids to Camp is not about only helping those who are in the most desperate situations. It is an opportunity for those who can afford to be generous to be a blessing for those who are doing it tough because of the drought. If this is you, please think seriously about whether you are prepared to accept their generous help, and allow them to bless your family. Situations change, and at some other point in your life, you will no doubt have a chance to be generous to others in various ways, possibly including financially.
I don’t like the idea of accepting a handout!
We all like the idea that we can make it on our own, but that is not the way God has designed us to live. He wishes for us to live in community, supporting each other as best we can. When one of us needs a hand, relationships are often strengthened as it brings us together to do more than we could do on our own! As stated in the previous FAQ response, please remember that situations change, and at some other point in your life you will no doubt have a chance to be generous to others in various ways, possibly including financially.
Can I still donate to the Kids to Camp fund?
Not at the moment. Our Kids to Camp appeal with Hope 103.2 raised enough money to send over 500 drought affected kids and youth to SU Camps in 2020 – a wonderful result! But there are other ways to support this work … see next FAQ!
How can I help drought-impacted families?
With many more kids expected to attend SU Camps in 2020 due to the incredible success of this campaign, donations to the SU Give Hope to Drought-Affected Families Appeal will allow SU to continue making sure these camps are well-resourced in the following ways:
- Supporting Volunteer Leaders
- Helping Regional Workers Travel to Remote Areas
- Developing Ministry Resources
Donate to the SU Give Hope to Drought-Affected Families Appeal.
Your support will allow volunteer leaders and regional staff workers to ensure these camps are well resourced as more children and youth get respite from the drought and are given the opportunity to hear Gospel hope proclaimed, see God’s love in action and make new friendships that could last a lifetime!
Kids to Camp 2019 | Recap
In 2018, Scripture Union NSW was approached by Sydney radio station, Hope 103.2, to see how their listeners could help drought-affected families in the bush.
And so the ‘Kids to Camp’ campaign was born.
In December 2018, generous donors sent over 100 kids from drought-affected areas to Scripture Union camps to get a break from the crushing effect of this terrible drought.
This was so successful, Hope 103.2 decided to run it again.
In December 2019, exceededing all expectations, sponsorships were raised for over 538 kids and youth from drought-affected families for the SU Camp of their choice in 2020. Incredible!
We believe God has big plans for 2020. With almost 40 Camps happening across the State, we’re praising God that even more kids will get respite from the drought, as well as an opportunity to hear Gospel hope proclaimed, see God’s love in action and make new friends for life.
Spread the good news!
With 99.4% of the State in drought, let someone know there are sponsorships available to any SU Camp in 2020, for any camper from a drought-affected area.
Fun and affordable, SU Camps run every school holidays, covering a range of interests. They are run by approved volunteer leaders who have boundless energy and a heart for reaching kids and youth for Christ.
